Abstract

A diagnosis of cancer in pregnancy is met with multiple challenges. This includes a masking of cancer-related signs or physical findings by common symptoms or changes associated with pregnancy. When cancer in pregnancy occurs, an understanding of the natural course of the malignancy, treatment options, and the potential impact on the fetus is imperative. Depending on the location and stage of the cancer, options for management may include termination followed by prompt initiation of treatment; surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy during pregnancy; or the delay of therapy until the postpartum period. Furthermore, the diagnosis and treatment of malignancy in pregnancy may have an impact on the neonate and future fertility. Using a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to optimize outcomes for both the mother and the neonate. This chapter reviews common malignancies, treatment options, and additional considerations when presented with a cancer diagnosis in pregnancy.
