Abstract

Neurostimulation and recording techniques have long been utilized to guide surgical lesioning. As localization techniques developed in tandem with brain implants, neurostimulation and recording became the treatment itself, obviating the need to perform a permanent lesion. In this chapter, we discuss the history of deep brain stimulation and present a clinical overview of deep brain stimulation and its use to treat various neurological and neuropsychological diseases. The chapter encompasses the selection process of patients, clinical and surgical considerations, targeting nuances, as well as future directions and innovations in the field of deep brain stimulation.
